Fitting Drums into a Busy Schedule
Being a mom is a full-time job in itself, and when you add a passion for drumming into the mix, finding time for your musical pursuits can be a real challenge. However, with careful time management and a few clever tricks up your sleeve, it is possible for drumming moms to strike a balance and pursue their rhythmic dreams. In this blog post, I will share some personal insights, along with valuable tips and tricks, on how busy moms can manage their time effectively while still enjoying the thrill of drumming.
Embrace the Power of Planning:
As a busy mom, planning is your best friend. Start by setting clear goals for your drumming practice sessions. Determine the frequency and duration that works best for you and your family. By incorporating drumming into your schedule, you can ensure that you make time for it regularly.
I would typically set my practice times during school hours and would practice for about 30-45 minutes. This worked great for me, simply because I didn't have to worry about interruption from my daughter because she's in school and didn't disturb my neighbors much; as I did have my acoustic drum set set up in the corner of my bedroom. Those school hours where also working hours. Which leads to the next tip; utilize small time slots.
Finding large chunks of time for drumming may seem impossible for some, but don't overlook the value of smaller time slots. Snatch a few minutes here and there during your child's nap time, while they are engrossed in an activity, or early in the morning before the household wakes up. These small pockets of time can add up and allow you to practice consistently. And having a designated area for drumming can be a game-changer.
Set up your drum kit in a corner of your home or any where you can easily access it. Having a space that is ready to go at a moment's notice will save you precious time and make it easier to fit in quick practice sessions.
As a drumming mom, having an electric drum set would be preferred for your practicing sessions and not having to worry about waking the children or disturbing the household.
For moms who have children homeschooling; it's best to establish a routine that allows for focused learning time and your drumming practice. If you're able to have a teacher come to your home to teach your child(run), that would be ideal, as you'll be able to use that time to escape for practice sessions. If a teacher isn't an option for you; consider syncing your drumming practice sessions with your children's independent study time. While they work on assignments or engage in self-guided learning activities, you can utilize this quiet period to practice drums. This way, you can make the most of your time while still being available for your children when they need assistance.
You could also integrate drumming into homeschooling. Blend your love for drumming with your children's educational journey. Incorporate music appreciation, rhythm exercises, or even drumming lessons into their homeschooling curriculum. By sharing your passion with them, you can create an enriching learning experience for both yourself and your children.
Moms please don't withhold from communicating and seeking support. Don't be afraid to communicate your passion for drumming with your loved ones. Let them know how important it is to you and solicit their understanding and support. By having open conversations, you can create a support system that helps you navigate your busy schedule.
Remember, the most important of them all; prioritize self-care. You cannot pour from an empty cup. As a drumming mom, it is crucial to prioritize self-care and recharge regularly. Carving out time for relaxation and personal well-being will not only benefit you but also make you a better parent and musician.
Conclusion:
Being a busy mom doesn't mean you have to give up on your dreams of drumming. By implementing effective time management strategies, embracing flexibility, and seeking support, you can find a harmonious balance between motherhood and your passion for drumming. Remember, it's not about finding large chunks of time but making the most of the little moments. So, grab those drumsticks, let the rhythm flow, and show the world that drumming moms can do it all!
