Involving Our Children in Our Drumming Journey

As drummers, we know the joy and fulfillment that drumming brings to our lives. But why keep the beat to ourselves? In this blog post, we'll explore ways in which drumming moms can involve our children in our drumming journey, fostering a love for music and rhythm that can last a lifetime. Let's dive in!

Create a Musical Environment:
From an early age, expose your children to music and rhythm by creating a musical environment at home. Play different genres of music, including those that feature drums prominently. Encourage your little ones to explore different instruments and rhythms, allowing them to develop their own musical preferences.

One of my daughter's Christmas gifts for her first Christmas was a kiddie drum set and keyboard. Both allowed for free musical play as well as had built in music to play along to.

Drumming Together:
One of the most enjoyable ways to involve your children in your drumming journey is by drumming together. Set aside regular drumming sessions where you can play alongside your kids. Start with simple rhythms and gradually introduce more complex patterns as they progress. This shared experience will not only strengthen your bond but also create beautiful memories.

Interactive Drumming Games:
Make drumming fun and engaging for your children by incorporating interactive drumming games. For example, you can play "Simon Says" with drumming commands, where your little ones follow your lead on the drums. Another idea is to create a drumming treasure hunt, where they have to follow clues and drum along to find hidden treasures. These games not only promote musicality but also enhance cognitive and motor skills.

Join a Drumming Circle or Class:
Look for local drumming circles or classes that welcome children and adults. Joining such groups provides an opportunity for your children to experience the joy of drumming in a community setting. They can learn from other drummers, gain exposure to different styles, and make new friends who share their passion for rhythm.

Attend Live Performances and Drumming Events:
Expose your children to the world of live drumming performances and events. Take them to concerts, music festivals, or drumming workshops where they can witness the energy and creativity of skilled drummers. This exposure will inspire and ignite their own love for drumming while expanding their musical horizons.

Encourage Creativity and Expression:
Drumming is not just about technique; it's also a form of creative expression. Encourage your children to explore their own rhythms and experiment with different sounds and patterns on the drums. Provide them with opportunities to compose their own drumming pieces or collaborate with you on a drumming duet. Celebrate their creativity and nurture their unique musical voices.

Conclusion:
Being a drumming mom is a beautiful journey that can be shared with our children. By involving them in our drumming adventures, we introduce them to the joy of music, foster their creativity, and strengthen our bond as a family. So, let's drum together, explore rhythms, and create lasting memories that will resonate with our children for years to come. Keep the beat alive and let the rhythm guide us on this extraordinary drumming momma journey!
